Dec. 9 -9:30 a.m. EST
The launch of space shuttle Atlantis has been rescheduled for no earlier than Jan. 2, 2008. The postponement will give engineers time to evaluate false readings from the engine cutoff sensor system that measures liquid hydrogen in the external tank.
Of the four engine cutoff sensors, ECO sensor number three gave false readings during Sunday's launch attempt. The sensor system is one of several that protect the shuttle's main engines by triggering their shut down if fuel runs unexpectedly low.
Atlantis' scheduled launch on Thursday was delayed after two of the four engine cutoff, or ECO, sensors in the shuttle's external fuel tank gave false readings. A third sensor failed after the tank was drained of fuel.

Spaceshuttle landt in Californië
***************************************
` De spaceshuttle Atlantis landt straks
op Edwards Airforce Base in Californië.
De Amerikaanse ruimtevaartorganisatie
NASA wil de shuttle niet op Kennedy
Space Centre laten landen vanwege het
slechte weer in Florida.
Vanwege de regen werd de landing een
paar keer uitgesteld.De vluchtleiding
wilde niet langer op goed weer wachten
en besloot de shuttle naar Californië
te sturen.Dat is een dure operatie, want
de Atlantis moet weer naar KSC worden
teruggebracht.
De zeven bemanningsleden van de shuttle
hebben twee weken aan de renovatie van
de Hubble-ruimtetelescoop gewerkt.

FLIGHT 193 : LAUNCH DELAYED
Kourou, December 9, 2009 - During final count-down operations for Flight 193 slated for today, an anomaly occurred in a launcher subsystem.
As a result, Arianespace has decided to replace this part, and thus to postpone the launch for a few days.
The launch vehicle and its HELIOS 2B satellite payload have been placed in stand-by mode and maintained in fully safe conditions.

NASA astronaut T.J. Creamer, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Soichi Noguchi, all flight engineers, launched in their Soyuz TMA-17 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 4:52 p.m. EST to begin a two-day journey to the International Space Station.
Less than 10 minutes after launch, their spacecraft reached orbit and its antennas and solar arrays were deployed.
NASA astronaut and Expedition 22 Commander Jeff Williams and Russian cosmonaut and Flight Engineer Maxim Suraev are currently the sole residents on the station, having arrived Oct. 2 aboard their Soyuz TMA-16 spacecraft.
Creamer, Kotov and Noguchi will complete the Expedition 22 crew when they dock to the station on Dec. 22.
Creamer, 50, a U.S. Army colonel from Upper Marlboro, Md., is making his first spaceflight. Assigned to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in 1995 as a space shuttle vehicle integration test engineer, he supported eight shuttle missions as vehicle integration test team lead and specialized in coordinating the information technologies for the Astronaut Office. Selected as an astronaut in 1998, Creamer worked with hardware integration and robotics and was a support astronaut for Expedition 12.
Kotov, 44, a physician and Russian Air Force colonel, is making his second spaceflight and serving his second tour aboard the station. Selected as a cosmonaut in 1996, he trained as a cosmonaut researcher for a flight on the Soyuz and as a backup crew member to the Mir-26 mission. A former lead test doctor at Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, he served as a flight engineer and Soyuz commander on the Expedition 15 mission in 2007. He will be a flight engineer for Expedition 22 and assume the duties of Expedition 23 commander when Williams departs in March 2010.
Noguchi, 44, an aeronautical engineer from Chigasaki, Kanagawa, Japan, is making his second spaceflight. He was selected by the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA), now JAXA, as an astronaut candidate in 1996 and trained at Johnson Space Center. After completing his astronaut training, he supported development and integration of the station’s Japanese Kibo experiment module. Noguchi flew on the STS-114 return-to-flight mission of Discovery in 2005. He has logged nearly 14 days in space, including more than 20 hours of spacewalks to test new procedures for shuttle inspection and repair techniques.

Klimaatsatelliet meet dikte poolijs
***************************************

(belga/kh)

US Discovery astronauts step out on last spacewalk
March 2, 2011 article comments (0) share
Two US astronauts on Wednesday stepped out on the second and final spacewalk of the Discovery shuttle mission at the International Space Station to work on repairs at the orbiting lab.
Steve Bowen and Alvin Drew embarked on their second spacewalk together at 10:42 Eastern time (1542 GMT) to complete work on a failed ammonia pump, remove installation on the Tranquility module and install spare parts on the Canadian robot Dextre.
The walk was briefly delayed by a minor leak in American Steve Bowen's spacesuit, caused by a faulty O-ring seal in a lithium hydroxide canister that scrubs out carbon dioxide. A new O-ring was installed to replace it.
Bowen was a late addition to the six-member US crew that blasted off aboard the Discovery on February 24, after astronaut Tim Kopra was injured in a bicycle accident.
Kopra, who was standing with the help of crutches, was among colleagues at mission control in Houston on Wednesday, and NASA said he would be "helping out" with the spacewalk from there.
Monday was Drew's first spacewalk and marked the sixth for Bowen.
The Discovery shuttle is the first of three US shuttles set to become museum pieces later this year.
Endeavour is to lift off on April 19 followed by Atlantis on June 28, marking the official end of the US space shuttle program after 30 years.
